Weinstein has been charged with rape, committing a criminal sex act, sexual abuse and sexual misconduct stemming from incidents with two separate women.

In total, more than 100 women have come forward to accuse Weinstein of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment, in cases that stretch back decades.

Evans' allegations added to those of dozens of other women, who claimed that Weinstein had engaged in a vast range of sexual misconduct dating back almost four decades, ranging from inappropriate touching to incidents of rape. Per The New Yorker, the criminal sex act charge stems from an account by Lucia Evans, who spoke to investigators from the Manhattan district attorney's office; the source of the rape charge has not been identified.

As Harvey Weinstein stood in court listening to prosecutors outline the charges against him Friday, the formerly powerful film producer mostly stood with his mouth open and his eyes low.

Actress Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, said she was "shocked". The NYPD did the same, stating it "thanks these fearless survivors who have come forward".

Weinstein was charged after a seven-month investigation in NY and more than 20 years of alleged misconduct. Weinstein pleaded not guilty, and maintains that he "has never engaged in non-consensual sexual behavior with anyone", his lawyer said in a statement Friday. "So a very complex investigation has finally come to fruition", Boyce said.

The investigation is being run by the U.S. District Attorney's Office in the Southern District of NY. On Thursday in the United States, Weinstein's spokesman Juda Engelmayer and Weinstein's NY lawyer Benjamin Brafman both declined to comment.

Mr Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood, and to the extent that there is bad behaviour in that industry, that is not what this is about. "I think five years from now, a lot of these weeds will be taken out". The producer is also under investigation in London and Los Angeles, and he is facing a lawsuit in Toronto.
