There, they found a 16-year-old female victim who'd suffered non-life threatening wounds.
Police say the suspect then left the store and tried a second carjacking, in the parking lot, shooting an adult male occupant of the auto in the process.
He is in critical condition, Laura Wohl, spokeswoman for the Tumwater Police Department, told reporters.
As the suspect tried to take a second vehicle a "bystander here in the parking lot shot the suspect", Wohl said. Chaos ensued as people ran from the store, and the gunman followed, with more shots fired outside.
Police tell the station that the gunman then attempted to carjack someone and was shot by a bystander.

An active investigation was underway at multiple scenes at or around the Tumwater Walmart, all believed to be related to the incident.
According to authorities, the suspect entered the Walmart Supercenter and opened fire at a display case, without injuring anyone, before leaving the store again to attempt another carjacking in the parking lot.
At that point, she said, two armed civilians in the parking lot confronted the suspect, one of whom shot the man dead. He was attempting to carjack a second vehicle in the parking lot when the armed bystander intervened. Police later determined that it was actually a carjacking, Wohl said.
The action inside the store set off fears of a possible mass shooting.
"All of a sudden, you hear this pop or a crash sound.About 15 to 20 seconds maybe even later, another sound exactly the same", said John Gerasimczyk.
