It is classified as a "pattern of gaming, either online or offline that appreciably increases the risk of harmful physical or mental health consequences to the individual or to others around this individual".
Gaming Disorder is now a recognized condition, appearing in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases. In the United Kingdom, the country's National Health Service has now started offering free treatment for those experiencing the disorder, though exactly what treatment would be most effective is still under discussion.
World Health Organization says on its website that all people who participate in gaming should be aware that gaming disorder is a real condition, and that it's important to be mindful of how often they play video games.
"If (video games) are interfering with the expected functions of the person - whether it is studies, whether it's socialization, whether it's work - then you need to be cautious and perhaps seek help", he said.
2 feared dead after earthquake hits Osaka in western Japan
No abnormalities were reported at the Takahama, Mihama and Oi nuclear plants in central Japan, according to Kansai Electric. Municipal authorities have confirmed three deaths in Osaka and a nearby city, a 9-year-old girl and two men in their 80s.
It characterised the addiction as when one has impaired control over their gaming behaviour, and as "a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour" that becomes so extensive that it "takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities". This has caused a lot of upset throughout the video game industry, with global organisations banding together to release a statement against the recognised addiction.
The games industry raked in US$108 billion (RM432 billion) worldwide previous year, more than double movie box-office receipts, said Superdata, which tracks the games and interactive media sector. How many hours do you think is normal to play video games each week?
This latest version, ICD-11, is completely electronic for the first time, in an effort to make it more accessible to doctors and other health workers around the world.
The WHO warned that those suffering from "gaming disorder" can suffer impacts to their family, social, educational, and occupational lives.
Mexico stun champions Germany 1-0 in World Cup opener
The Mexicans have also endured mixed results in the lead up to the tournament, having only won one of their three warm up matches. It may sound odd to suggest but was Germany too offensive early on against Mexico and too willing to play a high line?
The ICD 11 also introduced the related condition of Hazardous gaming. For example, say that your child has to do their homework first and/or get out and play for an hour before they're allowed to game.
"Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling from a psychological point of view", said Griffiths, a distinguished professor of behavioral addiction at Nottingham Trent University. "The intention is to reduce barriers to care", says Geoffrey Reed, a psychologist who is coordinating the mental health and behavior disorders section in the new edition of the I.C.D.
The ICD-11 is still under review, so its content may shift.
