According to the IDF, there has been an increase in fighting in Syria near the border with Israel since Tuesday morning as well as activity by the Syrian air forces.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the fighter jet took off from the Tayfur ("T-4") airbase in central Syria and flew some two kilometers into Israeli airspace before being intercepted.

In Monday's incident, the Israeli military launched two Patriot missiles at a Syrian Sukhoi plane.

Haaretz news website reports residents in north Israel saw interceptor missiles fired and heard explosions. The plane fell inside Syrian territory, and the fate of the pilot is unknown, the Israeli military said.

Syrian news agency Sana said Israel had targeted the jet over Syrian airspace, but did not say whether it was hit.

Tuesday marked the first time government forces reached the border fence with the U.N.'s Disengagement Observer Force at the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Israel and Syria fought their last war 45 years ago and later agreed to separate their forces either side of a 50-mile-long buffer zone - a boundary that had remained Israel's quietest since.

The IDF said the plane was under surveillance as it approached and breached the border. "That's what any other country would do", Danon said.

The heightened Israeli-Syrian tensions have prompted intercession by Moscow, which sent its foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and top general for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. We will not accept any such penetration of, or spillover into, our territory, neither on the ground nor in the air. When it became clear the two Syrian SS-22 missiles were going to land inside Syria, the David's Sling missiles were ordered to self-destruct, the Israeli military said.

Syria confirmed that the plane, which was partaking in an offensive against Islamic State group fighters in the Yarmouk basin, was downed by Israel but denied that it crossed into Israeli airspace. Israel's Galei Tzahal radio station said that 800 people had been taken to Jordan from southern Syria, where government forces continued an operation against opposition units.

The warplane's pilot was killed, a non-Syrian source close to the Syrian government told Reuters.

Both Israel and Syria say they're not in a hurry for war.
