"Same problems from P2, engine braking not how I want to, just rear-locking in the auto. We hadn't had the cleanest run through practice and I just knew putting the lap together would be crucial as always", said Ricciardo, who whooped in delight as he realised what he had done.
The jovial Australian has been out of sorts and out of luck since his last pole at the Monaco Grand Prix, which he went on to win - also his last visit to the podium.
