Multiple media reports have confirmed that former North Ogden, Utah mayor Brent Taylor was killed in action in Afghanistan Saturday in an apparent insider attack.

The New York Times quoted Debra Richardson, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokeswoman, in Kabul, as saying that the gunman appeared to have been a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. The attacker was then killed by Afghan forces.

The two USA service members were medically evacuated to Bagram Airfield.

RS also said the incident was under investigation.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert and Major General S. Burton are planning to address the press on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 12 p.m.at the Utah National Guard's Draper headquarters.

A US soldier was killed and another soldier was wounded in an apparent insider attack in capital Kabul.

Residents of North Ogden, a community of about 18,000 people, north of Salt Lake City, remembered Taylor as a leader and mayor willing to listen.

Taylor announced his deployment to his constituents in early January via Facebook Live, explaining that he had been called to help train Afghan commando units after President Donald Trump had ordered an increase in the number of USA troops in Afghanistan.

Taylor, a trainer of Afghan commandos, died when an Afghan soldier attacked.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said in September that training and vetting of Afghan forces was being stepped up to minimize such attacks, and that some training and advisory operations have been scaled back while security is assessed.

Over the past 10 months, Taylor posted periodic updates of his Afghanistan service to Facebook. "'United we stand, divided we fall.' God Bless America".

Taylor previously served two tours of duty in Iraq as a convoy security commander and then as an adviser to the Iraqi intelligence agency, according to a city council biography.
