The co-host of the Ballon d'Or award ceremony has been forced to apologise after the victor of the women's award, Ada Hegerberg, was asked on stage if she knew how to twerk at the event in Paris.

Solveig had asked the Norwegian forward if she knew "how to twerk" at a ceremony held here on Monday evening, to which she swiftly replied "no".

Hegerberg turned away, seemingly in disgust, with Solveig using social media to send the Ballon d'Or victor an apology and claiming he had cleared the matter up with the player.

In a video posted to Twitter shortly after, Solveig said "he [hadn't] wanted to offend anyone", and that the question, intended as a joke, had been misconstrued.

I'm a little surprised by what I read on the internet, I didn't want to offend anyone. "And I want to apologize to the ones I may have offended".

Croatia court drops false testimony charges against Luka Modric
France Football has awarded the prestigious prize to the best male player every year since 1956, adding a women's award this year. Luka Modric has won the 2018 Ballon d'Or ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezman, with Lionel Messi coming fifth.

Hegerberg called the award "a huge step for women's football" and also told The Associated Press she feels "very proud" to be the first Ballon d'Or-winning woman.

Unfortunately, the event was marred by host Martin Solveig's inappropriately timed joke. "I didn't consider it as sexual harassment or anything", according to NBC News. "It was more of a joke of making her dance", Bronze told BBC Sport.

The incident was a major talking point despite Hegerberg's achievement in becoming the first victor of the women's Ballon D'Or, an award which has been handed to male footballers since 1956.

The two-time Wimbledon victor and Olympic double gold medalist added: "And to everyone who thinks people are overreacting and it was just a joke".

"Women's football is taking huge strides and questions and comments like this take away from those strides we have taken". "She just won the first ever Ballon D'Or for women".

Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush dead at 94
In it, he said: "Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died". Bush oversaw the opening of his presidential library in College Station, Texas , and was widely honored as an elder statesman.

The Lyon play-maker accepted Solveig's apology and brushed off the incident. "Most importantly congratulations to Ada".

"It was sad if people thought about the situation like that, but it didn't come to my mind at all".

Upon lifting the prestigious award, Ada, who plays for French side, Lyon, addressed the star-studded crowd, challenging young women to believe in themselves. I got to dance a bit and I got the Ballon D'Or, and that's all that was in my mind.

Luka Modric won the Men's Ballon d'Or award on the same night, ending the decade long dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
